Need a hand with Sound Bin? Happy to help. Send us a note through the contact page and a real person will get back to you. Most questions are answered below — the silent-recording one especially, since it surprises people and it isn't a fault.

How do I start a recording?

Press the record button in the app. iOS then shows its own recording sheet to confirm — that sheet is the system's, not ours, and recording only begins once you confirm it there. A recording has to be started from the button inside Sound Bin. Starting one from Control Center or anywhere else in iOS won't produce a file in your library, because that recording isn't being handed to this app. When you're done, press stop and the recording appears in the library a moment later.

My recording is completely silent

Some apps mark their audio as protected, and when they do, the system hands the recorder silence rather than the sound. You get a file of the right length with nothing in it. This is the platform behaving as designed — it happens below the level any app can see or change, so it isn't a fault in Sound Bin and there's no setting that fixes it. Sound Bin checks each finished recording and tells you plainly when this has happened, rather than quietly saving you an empty file.

It recorded a notification going off

It records everything your phone plays, so anything that makes a sound while you're recording lands in the file — alerts, a message arriving, whatever starts playing next. Turn on Do Not Disturb before you start and most of that goes away. For the rest, trim it off afterwards; the ends are usually where it collects.

How does trimming work?

Open a recording, go to Trim, and drag the two handles inward. Everything outside them is dropped when you export. It's non-destructive — the file on your phone keeps every second of the original, so nothing is ever lost to a clumsy drag and Reset puts it back the way it was.

How do I get a recording out of the app?

Open it and choose Export. You get a standard .m4a through the normal iOS share sheet, with your trim already applied — save it to Files, send it in a message, or open it in whatever you use. Nothing is locked in this app.

What do I need to run it?

An iPhone running iOS 17 or later. That's the whole list — no account, no setup, nothing to configure.

A quick, honest note

Sound Bin is provided as-is. Please use it for your own personal recordings, respect the rights of whoever made whatever you were listening to, and keep to the laws where you live. And keep your own backups of anything you can't afford to lose — recordings live on your device, so deleting the app deletes them too.

Privacy

The short version: the app collects nothing and your recordings go only where you send them. The full story is on the Sound Bin privacy page.
